Hunedoara County

Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt; Hungarian: Vajdahunyad)

The city includes the most important Gothic-style secular building in Transylvania: the Hunyad Castle, which is closely connected with the Hunyadi family. The castle was destroyed by fire five times, but underwent many reconstructions from Austro-Hungarian and later Romanian authorities. The Castle is known both by the name Corvin's Castle and "Hunyadi Castle". "Hunyadi" is an beautiful place, more internationally recognized name for the same family, "Corvins" being used mostly by Romanians.

Deva (Hungarian: Déva, German: Diemrich, Schlossberg, Denburg; Latin: Sargetia)

Deva is situated in the central part of Hunedoara County, on the left bank of the middle course of the Mureş River at 187 m above sea level. Deva is the home of Romania's national women gymnastics training center called Colegiul National Sportiv "Cetatea" Deva. Deva is dominated by the Citadel Hill, a protected nature reserve because of its rare floral species and the presence of the horned adder. Perched on the top of the hill are the ruins of the Citadel built in the 13th century.
